Helmut Schwier

Helmut Schwier (born December 23, 1959 in Minden ) is a German Protestant theologian and since 2001 professor of New Testament and practical theology at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg .

After graduating from high school in Minden , Helmut Schwier studied Protestant theology at the Bethel Church University and at the University of Heidelberg. In September 1984 he passed his first theological examination at the examination office of the Evangelical Church of Westphalia. In 1988 he received his doctorate with a thesis on the destruction of the Jerusalem Temple (70 AD) under Gerd Theißen in Heidelberg . This was followed by practical work as vicar and pastor in Herford from 1988 to 1996 . In 1991 the second exam and ordination followed. During the Herford period, in addition to church work, ecumenism was the main focusin the framework of the Working Group of Christian Churches (ACK) in the center, and from 1995 to 1999 a lecturer in liturgy at the University of Church Music in Herford . From 1996 to 1999 Schwier was a research assistant for practical theology at the Church University of Bethel, where he completed his habilitation in 2000 with a study on the reform of the agenda of the Evangelical Church.

From 1999 to 2001 he was a councilor in the church chancellery of the Evangelical Church of the Union (Berlin) in the study office of the Leuenberg Church Fellowship / Community of Evangelical Churches in Europe. Here he organized u. a. the international doctrinal discussion groups “Church and Israel” and “Law and Gospel” and, together with the staff, the general assembly of the Leuenberg Church Fellowship in Belfast in 2001.

In October 2001 he became professor for New Testament and practical theology at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and also teaches homiletics at the Preachers' Seminar of the Badische Landeskirche. From 2004 to 2006 he was dean of the theological faculty. Since 2003 he has been an honorary university preacher at the Heidelberg University Church ( Peterskirche ) and is responsible u. a. the university church services , but also the contemporary church window project by Johannes Schreiter , which was completed in 2012 .

The focus of research and effectiveness is on the connections between exegesis , hermeneutics and homiletics , empiricism and sermon , homiletics and liturgy within the framework of a practical theology related to the communication and celebration of the Gospel, as well as between art and the church. Difficult is a member of various academic and church bodies, including a. in the Ecumenical Working Group of Protestant and Catholic Theologians , the Societas Homiletica and in the Liturgical Conference of Germany . From 2017-2019 he was deputy chairman, since 2019 chairman of the Evangelical Theological Faculty Day.

Helmut Schwier has been married since 1987 and has two daughters.
