Athletic career

Before Helmut Wilk moved to the upper division club SC Chemie Halle, the football focus of the Halle district, in 1961 , he was a goalkeeper for the company sports association (BSG) Motor Aschersleben in the third-class II. GDR league . In 1961, GDR football was changed from the calendar game year to the summer-spring game rhythm. To this end, a 39-game series had to be played in the major league between March 1961 and June 1962. In the official league squad, SC Chemie Wilk was the second goalkeeper behind Heinz Weise . He suffered a broken arm after the first game, so Wilk took him in on the following game days. After playing four league games, he was also injured. After another five missions in the second third of the season, he had to leave the goal again, which he in turn replaced from the 30th to the 39th matchday. This gave Wilk the opportunity to play in the cup final, which SC Chemie Halle won 3-1 over SC Dynamo Berlin . Also in 1962/63 none of the Halle goalkeepers could prevail in the long run, with 14 appearances in the season, which now lasts 26 games, Wilk finally had the most point games. In the 1963/64 season Wilk achieved the breakthrough to number one goal of SC Chemistry, because he played all 26 league games. At the end of the season, the Halle residents had to relegate from the GDR league again. In the GDR league , Wilk remained a regular goalkeeper, even though he only made 19 out of 30 matches. As always, Chemie Halle immediately returned to the top division. For the new league season 1965/66, the club had hired a new goalkeeper, Peter Nauert , who was named as the new number one in the season line-up ahead of Wilk. Nauert also played all games in the first half of the season, only when he had to sit out several times in the second half of the season did Wilk play nine league games by the end of the season. At that time, the people of Halle were already playing as Hallescher FC Chemie. In the 1967/68 season the situation changed again in favor of Wilk, who with his 20 stakes in the game was again the goalkeeper of the HFC. As such, Wilk also went into the 1967/68 season and was able to complete ten point games in the first half of the season. In the second half of the season he was replaced by Ralf Heine , who had joined the Halle team during the season. Wilk was only used in the last two league games. In his last league season, Wilk was called up to December 1968 only three times in a league game. Instead, he played in the third-rate district league Hallescher FC Chemie II, with whom he made promotion to the GDR league at the end of the season. He then ended his career in higher-class football.
