Works of art

Federal trilogy

The federal trilogy by Eberhard Linke was created in 1999. With the help of the foundation of the Stadtsparkasse Hemer and some private sponsors, the approximately two meter high bronze sculptures were handed over to the city of Hemer in 2001. The official title of the work of art is "Federal German Trilogy on Unity and Law and Freedom". The figure “Unity carries diversity” carries three upper bodies from the hips, the lower half of the body is closed. The “scales of law and justice” is a stylized form of Justitia . Two different weights are meant to represent the difference between law and justice. Instead of being blindfolded, the artist did without depicting a face. The third sculpture is called “Labor of Freedom”. The body is open, feet and legs rise loose on rungs. The figure is intended to illustrate the reciprocal relationship between achieving one's own freedom and tolerance for others. The three sculptures are mounted on a round concrete slab and were bordered with hedges in 2003.

Hemer fountain

The Hemer Fountain was inaugurated on September 27, 1985. The then 17-year-old student Carsten Schauhoff from the Friedrich-Leopold-Woeste-Gymnasium had won a design competition for various schools in Hemeran with his design. The fountain consists of five stainless steel gargoyles about 2.5 meters high, arranged in a circle. The spears are arched in the upper part and shaped so that a wide wall of water falls down. Both solar radiation and the wind change the appearance. The water meets a round granite basin at the bottom. The work of art adapts to the existing architecture in the city center. In the course of construction work in the pedestrian zone in front of the State Garden Show 2010 , the fountain was dismantled at its previous location at Hademareplatz and re-installed in April 2010 near the indoor pool.

From the depths

The picture stele from the depths , also known as the city column, was unveiled on May 22, 1993. The work of art by Ulle Hees was ordered as part of the conversion of the city center into a pedestrian zone. The stele is located directly on the bank of the Oese . The myths, work and history of Hemer are shown on the three sides. Each side has an underground and an above-ground part. In the lower part you can see fossils and caves. The upper part shows on the myth side the devil who loses stones and thus creates the sea of rocks. On the work side you can see a miner, a reference to the earlier mining in Hemer. The third page shows a monk holding the Grafschaft monastery document in which Hemer was first mentioned. Smaller pictures refer to other historical events such as the Reformation, the world wars and the railway connection. The stele is about 3.5 meters high and made of bronze.

Rise to success

The sculpture Ascent to Success was donated by the Hemeran doctor and development worker Heinrich Lütke and created in 2003 by the Iserlohn artist Edeltraut Glingener . The bronze work of art stands on two pedestals, the distance between which indicates the distance between industrialized and developing countries. The distance is overcome by a rising arm on which nine figures rise. The number of figures symbolizes the number of countries in which the Dr. Heinz and Anita Lütke Foundation had schools built. At the top, a hand that both gives and protects closes the work of art. The figure that is closest to the hand exudes the greatest self-confidence. The sculpture itself is 80 centimeters high, the base is 90 centimeters high.

Christophorus Fountain

The Christophorus fountain by the Viennese artist Ernst Fuchs dates from 1977 and was a gift from the Grohe couple, company founders of Grohe AG and honorary citizens of the city of Hemer. On October 18, 1977, the fountain was unveiled in front of 1,500 spectators on Hademareplatz. The main motif of the three-part bronze work of art is St. Christopher carrying the Christ child across a river. The fountain thus matched the Grohe motto "Grohe has the water under control". In autumn 2002 the fountain was restored and moved to Grohe-Platz. There the sculpture is attached to a modern glass wall, which is also bathed in water.

City gate

The city gate by Udo Unterieser , which financed the foundation of Stadtsparkasse Hemer , was unveiled on May 16, 1997. The gate is 5.5 meters high and four meters wide and is made of larch wood , which creates a connection to the wealth of forests in Hemeran. In the upper part, glass panes are framed, which break the sunlight and thus enable play of colors on the inside. The city gate is located between the building of the Sparkasse Märkisches Sauerland Hemer-Menden and the Christkönig Church .
