Hendrick ter Brugghen
Hendrick ter Brugghen (* 1588 in The Hague or Utrecht , † November 1, 1629 there ) was a Dutch baroque painter .
Act
Ter Brugghen, like Dirck van Baburen and Gerrit van Honthorst, was a follower of the Italian artist Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio , which is why he is counted among the Utrecht Caravaggists . He came from a noble Dutch family. The lawyer Jan ter Brugghen, who settled with his family in Utrecht around 1591, had been the lawyer since father. There ter Brugghen became a pupil of Abraham Bloemaert . Around 1604, while Caravaggio was still alive, he traveled to Rome and stayed in Italy until 1614 . In 1615 he returned to Utrecht and in 1616 joined the local painters' guild. He developed his own style, for example painting dark figures against a light background. His works ranged from religious to mythological and literary subjects to depictions of people in domestic settings. His first dated painting is from 1620 and shows a pelvic singer.
