life and work

Brouwer is the brother of the mathematician Luitzen Egbertus Jan Brouwer . He grew up in Haarlem and studied mining at the TH Delft with Gustaaf Adolf Frederik Molengraaff and in Paris with the mineralogist Antoine Lacroix . In 1910 he received his doctorate, where he also undertook a research trip to South Africa. Then he went to the mining authority in the Dutch East Indies (Dienst van Mijnbouw). In 1911 he took part in the expedition from Molengraaff to Timor. He mapped and collected in Timor, Sumatra and the Moluccas, among others, before he returned to the Netherlands in 1917 and became Professor of Historical Geology and Paleontology at the TH Delft. From 1928 he was professor of geology and petrology at the University of Amsterdam as the successor to Eugène Dubois . In 1956 he retired.

Brouwer dealt with tectonics and petrology and the connection between the two disciplines. He organized two expeditions from the University of Amsterdam to Indonesia, in 1929 to Celebes and in 1937 to Timor, among others . In Europe he carried out research in Lapland , southern Spain ( Betic Cordillera ) and Corsica, among others .

In 1956 he received the Gustav Steinmann Medal in recognition of the outstanding services he has made to the geology of Indonesia and to petrological-tectonic research .

His students include Reinout Willem van Bemmelen , who also studied the geology of Indonesia and was a professor in Utrecht, and Willem Paul de Roever , professor in Leiden.
