Ottomar Oertel (born August 22, 1840 , † October 19, 1914 ) was a Prussian local politician and long-time mayor and mayor of Liegnitz .

career

Oertel studied law in Jena and Halle and initially served in the church. After a brief employment as a judge in a court martial in Torgau, he was appointed mayor of Köpenick in 1868 .

In 1871 Oertel moved to Liegnitz, also in the role of mayor. There he accompanied the transition from a fortress to a modern industrial city. The city had not grown beyond its medieval city walls until 1872, although it had since been laid down. Oertel provided a development plan to control the growth of the city and laid the foundations for the infrastructure of a rapidly growing city such as water, gas and electricity supply, sewerage and sewage treatment plants, trams, slaughterhouses, but also schools, educational institutions (trade school, agricultural school) and recreational areas (city park, palm house) and the New Town Hall from 1905. During Oertel's 40-year reign, the population of Liegnitz tripled from 23,000 in 1870 to 69,000 in 1910.

Oertel represented his city in the Silesian provincial parliament and from 1892 to 1912 in the Prussian manor house .

At the end of 1911, Oertel announced his resignation, which took effect in July 1912.

Honors

After resigning from his office, Oertel was made an honorary citizen of the city of Liegnitz and a square in Liegnitz was named after him. He became honorary chairman of the Silesian City Council.

In 1890 he received the Order of the Red Eagle, IV class.
