Hendrik Barend Greven (born December 21, 1850 in Rotterdam , † December 13, 1933 in The Hague ) was a Dutch economist and statistician.

Life

Hendrik Barend was the only son of the painter Jacob Greven (* around 1807 in Rotterdam; † March 27, 1852 ibid.) And his second wife Wilhelmina Johanna Gubbels, who married on September 5, 1849 in Rotterdam (* October 30, 1816 in Rotterdam; † February 2, 1895 in Rotterdam). From 1863 he attended grammar school in Rotterdam and began studying at Leiden University in 1868 . Here he initially devoted himself to theological studies with Abraham Kuenen and Johannes Henricus Scholten , but later switched to the Faculty of Law where he devoted himself to economic issues under Simon Vissering and Johannes Theodoor Buys . After he had become a teacher of political science at the higher citizens' school (HBS) in Leiden in 1874 , he received his doctorate in law on October 16, 1875 with the thesis De ontwikkeling der bevolkingsleer under Vissering.

In 1879 he moved to the Muntcollege in Utrecht as a member of the secretary , and on February 4, 1880, he became professor of economics, statistics and political history at the University of Leiden , which he gave up with the speech Oude en nieuwe economie, een poging tot. In 1903 he became rector of the Alma Mater , for which he gave the speech Theoretische economie en sociale politiek . He participated in the introduction of the marginal utility theory and became commissioner of the first Dutch accident insurance, which was established in 1892. In 1895 he worked in the State Commission for Pension and Disability Insurance and campaigned for social insurance. In addition, he was a member of the Central Commission for Statistics, was a member of the Central Statistical Office in 1892 and was deputy chairman of the institution from 1899 to 1926. In 1915 he retired from his professorship and lived in The Hague in his later years.

Greven married on July 13, 1876 in Rotterdam with Catharina Spieringshoek (born March 5, 1853 in Rotterdam; † February 14, 1926 in The Hague), the daughter of Simon Andries Spieringshoek (born August 22, 1821 in Rotterdam; † August 1891 ibid.) and his wife Wilhelmina Josina Snelleman (born September 8, 1822 in Rotterdam; † January 24, 1898 ibid.). There are two daughters from the marriage. Wilhelmina Johanna Josina Greven (* July 23, 1877 in Leiden; † May 21, 1967 in Almelo) married on June 28, 1915 in Leiden with the lecturer for archeology in Utrecht, Dr. Abraham Rutgers van der Loeff (* April 21, 1876 in Barchem; † January 20, 1962 in The Hague) and Jacoba Catharina Greven (* February 21, 1882 in Leiden; † August 25, 1903 ibid.)
