Henk van Twillert

Henk van Twillert (* 1959 ) is a Dutch saxophonist, singer-songwriter and music teacher.

From the age of ten, Van Twillert began training as a clarinetist with Henk Graaf , the solo clarinetist of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orkest . Three years later he became a saxophone student of Jacques Landa at the Amersfoort Music School. From 1978 he studied saxophone with Ed Bogaard at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam . He also attended master classes from Daniel Defayer (France), François Daneels (Belgium) and Iwan Roth (Switzerland).

In 1979 he founded the Amsterdam Saxophone Quartet with Bart Kok , which undertook concert tours with musicians such as Jaap van Zweden , Daniel Wayenberg and Han Bennink and appeared at the opening of the Amsterdam Arena in 1996 and at the final concert of Expo 98 in Lisbon. From 1993 he recorded several CDs with the Amsterdam soloist Quintet , including Tango, a homage to Astor Piazzolla (with Sonja van Beek ) and Homage to Heitor Villa-Lobos . In 2001 he made a recording of Johann Sebastian Bach's cello suites on the saxophone, in 2002 he recorded fado music with the singer Carlos da Carmo , and the album Confesso was created with the Latvian singer Inessa Galante .

Since 1986 van Twillert has been working as a duo with the pianist Tjako van Schie . Both performed in the Netherlands, Portugal and the Netherlands Antilles and released the triple album A Bag of Music in 2011 .

From 2009 to 2011 he lived in New York, where he worked on his dissertation and made his debut as a singer-songwriter and band leader with the album New York . In 2012 he performed with de Carmo at the Carré Theater in Amsterdam. As part of the Meet the Artists concert series he founded in 2012 , he gives with musicians in Amsterdam and Rotterdam.

After teaching at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam for 25 years, van Twillert took on a teaching position at the Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espetáculo in Portugal, where he founded saxophone ensembles such as the Portuguese Saxophone Orchestra and Vento do Norte . He also teaches regularly in the saxophone class of the Venezuela Youth Symphony Orchestra .
