Inessa Galante , also Inese Galante (born March 12, 1954 in Riga , Latvian SSR ) is a Latvian opera singer ( soprano ).

Life

Inessa Galante came into contact with singing as a child: her mother sang coloratura , her father sang as bass . Despite the musical parental home, she began studying pharmacy after finishing school. She also worked in this profession for a short time. But in 1977 she began her vocal studies at the Riga Conservatory. Rachel Shulova and Professor Ludmilla Braun took over their training . In 1980, in her third year of study, she made her debut at the Riga Opera House in the title role of La traviata . In 1982 she got a permanent engagement at the Latvian National Opera in Riga, where she worked until 1991. She was there u. a. to be heard in Rigoletto (Gilda), L'elisir d'amore (Adina), Il barbiere di Siviglia (Rosina), Gounod's Faust (Marguerite), Lucia di Lammermoor (Lucia), La Rondine (Magda) and in the roles of Olympia in Hoffmann's stories , the title role in Snegurotschka by Rimski-Korsakow and as Micaela in Carmen .

Although in great international demand, she only left her homeland for guest appearances or touring. Yehudi Menuhin and Zubin Mehta urged Galante early on to continue her career in the West, but only after guest appearances at the Leningrad Opera (Traviata, Lucia di Lammermoor and Marguerite) did she decide to move to the National Theater Mannheim in 1991 . There she was in the roles of Pamina ( Die Zauberflöte ), Lauretta ( Gianni Schicchi von Puccini), Nedda ( Pagliacci ), Freia ( Das Rheingold ), Mimi ( La Bohème ), Zémire ( Zémire et Azor von Grétry ), Euridice ( Orfeo ed Euridice von Gluck ), Margherita ( Mefistofele von Boito ) as well as and as Najade ( Ariadne auf Naxos ) to see and hear.

At the same time, she made guest appearances at the opera houses in Frankfurt a. M. , Cologne and Wiesbaden. In 1996 she made guest appearances at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, at the Montpellier Festival and at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein .

In addition, there were concerts in Moscow, Leningrad and the Baltic States, among others, as well as three tours in the USA and Canada in her early career. (Toronto) on. She performed with José Carreras at a concert in Rotterdam and, upon invitation by the British royal family, at Kensington Palace .

Inessa Galante had her breakthrough with music recording in 1995 when her album Debut in the Netherlands topped the classical music charts for weeks and was honored with platinum in 2000. The most popular and most frequently played piece on this CD was the wrongly attributed to Giulio Caccini , Ave Maria , as a result of which this almost forgotten Italian composer experienced a renaissance worldwide.

Inessa Galante has not been under contract at any opera house since 1999. Her performances in recent years have mainly taken place in her current adopted home Germany, Great Britain and the Baltic States, especially in her home country Latvia.
