Henri-Alexandre Junod (also: Henri Alexandre Junod or Henri A. Junod ; born May 17, 1863 in Saint-Martin, Chézard-Saint-Martin parish ; † April 22, 1934 in Geneva ) was a French-speaking Swiss Protestant theologian , ethnologist , linguists and South Africa - missionary .

Life

Junod was a pastor's son and studied at the University of Neuchâtel theology . 1889-1896 he went to Rikatla as a missionary .

His work The Life of a South African Tribe ("The life of a South African tribe"), which first appeared in French in 1898 under the title Les Ba-Ronga , is considered a classic in ethnology. The first extended English edition followed in 1912/13, the authoritative edition appeared in 1927. The book describes the life of the Bantu tribes of the Tonga (Batonga) and Ronga (Baronga) in the border area of Mozambique , South Africa and Zambia from the late 18th century to the end described in detail for the year 1927, but neglecting the labor migration of young men to South Africa, which began in 1850, its consequences and the clear influence of Europeans in the region, which he carefully avoided depicting in photographs.
