Henri Garat (also Henry Garat ; * 3. April 1902 as Émile Henri Camille Garassu in Paris ; † 13. August 1959 in Hyeres , France ) was a French singer , dancer and actor , a star of film and Romance -operetten 1930s.

Live and act

Garat had Romanian ancestors. He began in 1918 as a singer and comedian at the Paris Casino de Paris. There Mistinguett discovered him , who encouraged him and made him her lover for a while. In the 1920s, Garat had a moderate career as a singer, dancer and actor at the Moulin Rouge and Parisian Music Halls . In 1929 he made his breakthrough on the stage in La Miss , succeeding Maurice Chevalier .

With the dawn of the sound film age, Henri Garat was brought in front of the camera. The first few years he was considered France's Willy Fritsch and was given roles as a gallant lover and charmer. Between 1930 and 1936 it was often seen in French versions of German originals made in Berlin . So he took Fritsch roles in the French-language versions ( version films ) of burglars , The Three of the gas station , commanding Her Highness , The Congress Dances , A blond dream , Amphitryon - From the clouds comes the luck and happiness children . In between (1933) there was a little productive trip to Hollywood , where he played alongside Janet Gaynor under the direction of William Dieterle . Henri Garat returned to Berlin studios for the last time in 1938 for the French film He and His Sister .

“Garat's popularity became at times hysterical. Women clung to his car tires and paid homage to him wherever he appeared. His life between yachts and airplanes was wasteful, Garat wasting his millions on expensive women as quickly as he deserved them. ”But his dissolute life also got Garat into trouble in the late 1930s. He used drugs and served multiple prison terms. In the middle of the Second World War , Henri Garat received no more film offers and his fortune was exhausted. He bought a small toy store and named it Chemin du paradis , based on one of his first successes in a movie.

After the war, some of his few remaining friends allowed him to return to the stage and he performed at the cabaret. Most recently, the actor was paralyzed on both legs. When Garat died at the age of 57, "he was buried in his white tuxedo, with which he had once raptured women's hearts".
