Henri Wernli

Henri Wernli (* 3. June 1898 in Plainpalais today to Geneva belong; † 1961 in Eigental ) was a Swiss Schwinger and freestyle wrestler .

Success as a wrestler

Henri Wernli was involved in the Swiss national sport of wrestling from an early age. It was in 1926 at the Swiss Federal Gymnastics Festival in Lucerne Swiss wrestling champion and 1932 in the Swiss Federal Gymnastics Festival Aarau "Erstgekrönter". These are the highest awards given in this sport.

Success as a wrestler

Wernli also started in competitions in freestyle wrestling, in which leg grips are permitted, as in swinging, in contrast to Greco-Roman wrestling. At the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris he won the silver medal in the heavyweight division ( then from 87 kg, today from 97 kg body weight ) and defeated four opponents ( Andrew McDonald , Great Britain, Ernst Nilsson , Sweden, Edmond Dame, France, and Johan Richthoff , Sweden) before he was defeated by the American Harry Steel in the final battle . At the Olympic Games in Amsterdam in 1928 , things went less well for him. He only ended up in 5th place there (victory over Léon Charlier, Belgium, and loss to Edvard George, USA).

Henri Wernli did not have the opportunity to start at world championships, as no official world championships were held from 1923 to 1949.

Life

Henri Wernli came from Geneva and lived in Bern from 1928 . He died of a heart attack on his 63rd birthday while on vacation in Eigental .
