geography

Aerial photo (1954)

The Eigental is a trough valley and extends in an approximately 7.5 km long semicircular arc around the Studberg  ( 1603  m ) and the Regenflüeli  ( 1582.1  m ). It begins north of the Mittaggüpfi in the headwaters of the Rümlig, starting from the Trochemattsattel  ( 1461  m ) and descends rapidly in an easterly direction parallel to the course of the Alpine rim chain over the Trochematt  ( 1376  m ) and the Stafel  ( 1288  m ) into the Blattenloch  ( 1147  m ). In the Schwändeliwald , at an altitude of 1095  m, the former outflow of the Pilatussee flows from the Oberalp over the Bründle to the Rümlig, which drains the Eigental deep into the subalpine flysch . After the confluence of the Bründlenbach , the Rümlig breaks through the subalpine Molasse in a large loop towards the north , which is visible in the terrain through the inclined Nagelfluhband . From the inflow of the Spirbach (already mentioned in 1380) , the Rümlig runs as a natural cantonal border past Unter Lauelen  (Canton Nidwalden, 1063  m ) to Hundschüpfen , where the border now rises up to Lauelenegg . Below Buechstäg  ( 1006  m ), the valley turns to the northwest and from the Linde  ( 973  m ) finally runs in a westerly direction again almost parallel to the Alps through a landscape of the folded molasse , which is underlaid in marl and sandstone and shaped by the Rümlig glacier . The Rümlig continues to flow past the Foremoos and the village of Eigenhal  ( 970  m ) on the lateral moraine on the right and the Meienstossmoos and the Meienstoss  ( 961  m ) on the left, where it finally flows through the terminal moraine  ( 987  m ) as the valley end.

fauna and Flora

The precipitation-rich climate of the proper valley with reservoirs favors the formation of wetlands. There is an amphibian spawning area of national importance above the Hirsbode  ( 1401  m ) up to the Studberg . Also the Forrenmoos is faced darter , common frog , common toad , Glögglifrosch , Alpine newt , palmate newt , spotted salamander and Alpine salamander species-rich. The Eigental, with its flat and raised bogs, is under landscape protection and is part of the federal inventory of landscapes and natural monuments of national importance BLN. On the Lauelenegg there is a game rest zone , so the Eigental counts not only red kites , deer , fox , martens , alpine marmots and chamois but also a colony of alpine ibexes among its inhabitants. In addition to numerous alpine choughs , you can also find rare bird species such as the dipper .

The flora includes rare orchids such as the fly ragwort or the yellow lady's slipper .

history

The Eigental - a first mention is dated to the year 1287 as Oegental - was known as Eiental and belonged to the monastery of Lucerne as the property of the Murbach Monastery . The area was a fiefdom that was granted to the lords of Littau until 1479 and later to the citizens of Lucerne. The Eigental has belonged to the church of Schwarzenberg since 1832 and politically since August 13, 1846.

Pilgrimage and health resort

Eigenhal, Marienkapelle with Pilatus

In 1517 a chapel was built in Eigenhal and expanded several times in the following centuries. Along with the Hergiswald pilgrimage church and the legendary Lake Pilatus, it was a lively pilgrimage site from the 16th to 18th centuries . The chaplain's house, which belongs to the chapel, became the spa house in 1858, and several holiday colonies were built in the late 19th century. The Eigental is still a popular local recreation area for Lucerne and the agglomeration, where numerous cross-country trails are laid out in winter . It can be reached with a PostBus course from Lucerne train station and by car via Kriens or via Malters and Schwarzenberg.

Economical meaning

In the Eigental there are several Alps on which Brown Swiss are summered, for example. B. on the Alp Trochematt or on the Alp Rosebode . The numerous springs in the Eigental are important suppliers of drinking water and have been used for the city of Lucerne since 1875 . Parallel to the planning of the reservoir in Lungern , around 1900, the Eigenhal waterworks asked for permission to build a dam and a water pipe to Malters in order to produce electricity there - the reservoir was not built, to the delight of nature lovers. The Swiss Army operates a firing range in Meienstoss for Territorial Region 2, which has been in operation since 1904.
