Bonsai Kitten is a German rock band from Berlin , which was founded in 2005 by the singer Tiger Lilly Marleen. The name Bonsai Kitten comes from the Internet hoax Bonsai Kitten that appeared in 2000 .

history

The idea for the band came from the Berlin singer Tiger Lilly Marleen. From 2004 to 2005 she was looking for musicians for her band project. In mid-2005 the band was complete with Hajo Sun as guitarist and Alexx DeLarge as drummer and later complete with Krczycz as double bassist. At the beginning of 2012 there was a change on the guitar and bonsai kittens welcomed Highko Strom to the team. In 2015 there was a change in the band instrumentation and an associated change in the band line-up. Bonsai Kitten exchanged the double bass for an electric bass and thus leave their once self-invented "Killbilly" sound behind. With Spoxx on the electric bass and a new sound, bonsai kittens can be assigned to the RiotRock genre .

Already on February 27, 2007 the debut EP Bonsai Kitten was released exclusively on the Japanese market, on the label Downer Records, a division of the label On The Hill Records in Toyohashi . The six songs on the album were the cover versions Poison by Alice Cooper , Ja Ja Wo Geht's Lank Peter Pank by Trio , Heartbreaker by Pat Benatar , But Not Tonight by Depeche Mode and the two original compositions by the band Don't You Get Too Drunk to Fuck and That's Why the Lady Is a Vamp . The EP has long been sold out. Shortly after the EP was released, bonsai kittens were shown at various festivals such as B. the Satanic Stomp , Bunkerbilly (Austria), Rock My Ass and Kings of Psychobilly . In November 2007 a nationwide support tour for Mad Dog Cole followed .

Since then, Bonsai Kitten have played shows all over Europe and have also been booked as support acts for The Toy Dolls , The Adicts , The BossHoss , The Bones , Mad Sin , King Kurt , Dick Dale , Mad Sin and many more, as well as at German festivals such as Rock im Park , Ruhrpott Rodeo , Psychomania Rumble and international festivals such as the Biranthology Fest (Italy), Rebellion Punk Music Festival , (England), Bedlam Breakout (England), Club Sin Festival (Finland), and at the Kempnerpop Festival (Netherlands).

Based on Quentin Tarantino's film Kill Bill , in addition to the music style, the cover of the first real long player Done With Hell was created. This came out on February 18, 2011 at Wolverine Records in the distribution of Soulfood . In addition to the cover version of the title Please Mr. Jailor , originally by Wynona Carr , only his own pieces can be heard. On August 26, 2011, a limited edition of the album was additionally Done With Hell as a record released in Wolverine Records on heavy, yellow vinyl, which is also now sold out.

On February 24, 2012, the second album Welcome to My World was released on CD, download and limited vinyl. In addition to the cover version of the The Nerves classic Hanging on the Telephone , only the band's own compositions can be heard. Since the album was only released in a limited edition, the prices of the last available copies have also increased immensely. After the release of the second album, Bonsai Kitten toured extensively in Germany and again played Europe-wide live shows in Switzerland, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Romania, Italy and Great Britain (UK).

The third full- length album Occupy Yourself! was finally released on March 28, 2014 on the Wolverine Records label as CD and limited white vinyl. It is also available as a download. In 2014 Bonsai Kitten were on the “Occupy Yourself!” Tour to promote the album. In the course of 2014 the double bass was replaced by an electric bass, which changed the band's sound considerably. This made the coined "Killbilly" sound into RiotRock .

In 2015, they worked together with producer Franz Plasa , who has also produced musicians like Rio Reiser and Selig . Two songs were created, of which the first single The Darkest Light was released on February 19, 2016 as a download with video. The further harbinger of the new Bonsai Kitten album, the single Mindcraft , was released in advance as a video and download via Bandcamp on March 18, 2017 . The Bonsai Kitten album Mindcraft was financed by fans and the community through a very successful crowdfunding campaign in 2017 and was released on September 8, 2017 by 7StarMusic and Rough Trade Distribution .

Bonsai Kitten played some shows for the new album Mindcraft in 2017 and were finally one of the last acts to perform live at the esteemed Bassy Cowboy Club in (Berlin) in early 2018 . After the departure of guitarist Highko Strom, who from now on played as guitarist with The Adicts , Tiger Lilly Marleen reorganized her band.

style

Until mid-2014, bonsai kittens played their own established “killbilly” style, a mixture of punk 'n' roll and rock influences.

In mid-2014 they replaced the double bass with the electric bass in the band's instrumentation. As a result, the style was driven more clearly into the rock direction, in which the influences of rock 'n' roll , punk and rock music can be clearly heard. Since 2015, Bonsai Kitten can be assigned to Riot Rock , which has had a clear metal impact with strong blues rock influences since 2020 .
