Territorial region
The territorial region (Ter Reg) is an organizational unit (so-called large association) of the Swiss Army .
structure
The territorial regions serve as a regional link to the cantons and have the specific knowledge in their area. According to Art. 4 of the Ordinance on the Territorial Tasks of the Armed Forces (VTA) , the division of responsibility is divided into four territorial regions, to which the cantons are assigned as follows:
Territorial region 1 (Reg ter 1)
Territorial region 2 (Ter Reg 2)
- Northwest and Central Switzerland: Cantons of Aargau , Basel-Country , Basel-Stadt , Lucerne , Nidwalden , Obwalden , Solothurn
Territorial region 3 (Ter Reg 3)
- Central and Southeastern Switzerland: Cantons of Graubünden , Schwyz , Ticino , Uri , Zug
Territorial region 4 (Ter Reg 4)
- Eastern Switzerland: Cantons of Appenzell Innerrhoden , Appenzell Ausserrhoden , Glarus , St. Gallen , Schaffhausen , Thurgau , Zurich
The Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS) can, at the request of the Commander-in-Chief or the Chief of the Army, make changes to the boundaries of the territorial operational areas (Art. 4 Par. 3 VTA).
organization
A territorial region is led by a senior staff officer with the rank of a divisional officer . It consists of the staff (Staff Ter Reg), the cantonal territorial liaison staffs (KTVS, 1 per canton) and several subordinate troops. In the basic configuration, it is assigned a command support battalion (FU Bat), a disaster relief battalion (Kata Hi Bat) and a genius battalion (G Bat). Two of the four Ter Reg have no G Bat, but have a second Kata Hi Bat. As part of the basic readiness, additional battalions can be assigned or placed under the Ter Reg.
tasks
The territorial region conducts the subsidiary army operations in its area and coordinates civil-military cooperation (ZMZ, cf. Art. 5 VTA). In the event of a defense, it can be used with subordinate units for operations to protect the population, the infrastructure and the rear operating room.
history
The territorial regions emerged from the territorial zones (Ter Zo). With the further development of the army from 2017 (again) they are to become territorial divisions (Ter Div), to which additional infantry battalions are subordinate.
