Henriette Maria Luise von Hayn (born May 22, 1724 in Idstein , Hesse ; † August 27, 1782 in Herrnhut , Upper Lusatia ) was a German poet of sacred songs , director of an educational institution for girls and the sister house in Herrnhut, and a member of the Moravian Brethren .

Life

Henriette Louise von Hayn was the daughter of the princely Nassau chief hunter Georg Heinrich von Hayn and his wife Ernestine Eberhardine, née von Lassberg. She was the third oldest child among her ten siblings. Educated in the Lutheran Church, she became acquainted with this movement through the slogans of the Moravian Brethren. In 1744 she came to the Brothers Church in Herrnhaag near Büdingen . Soon accepted into the choir of the Single Sisters , she became a teacher at the girls' institution there. Ordained a deaconess in 1748 , in 1750 she was entrusted with the supervision of all the girls in the community. On October 6, 1766 she came to Herrnhut in Upper Lusatia, where she spent 16 years as the head of the single sister house of the mother community of the Brothers University. She died there on August 27, 1782 and was buried there in the church.

Hymns

Henriette Maria Luise von Hayn wrote numerous hymns, 44 of which were published in the Brothers Hymnal from 1778. Her best-known song is because I am Jesus 'sheep , which can still be found in regional editions of the Evangelical Hymnbook and is sung in many languages ​​(Engl: Jesus makes my heart rejoice or I am Jesus' little Lamb ), and the Easter song Ave zum Step out of the chamber (Engl: Hail, all hail victorious Lord and Savior ) which is sung worldwide in the Easter morning celebration of the Brethren.
