Christian Gregor

Christian Gregor (born January 1, 1723 in Dirsdorf near Nimptsch , Silesia ; † November 6, 1801 in Berthelsdorf near Herrnhut , Upper Lusatia ) was a German Protestant clergyman and church musician.

Life

Raised as an orphan on the farm of Herr von Pfeil, he received qualified music lessons as a child and became acquainted with Herrnhut at a young age. In 1742 he began working there as an organist and leader of the community music. His first compositions were written in 1759. On behalf of the Moravian Brethren , he toured the communities of several European and American countries in various functions. In 1789 he was ordained bishop in Herrnhut.

Gregor’s musical historical significance is primarily in the field of hymnology. From 1775 he compiled the new Herrnhut hymnal.
