Live and act

Henriette Sechehaye, Paul Klee's last private student , was born in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1907. Her parents died early. So she was raised by relatives in Geneva together with her brother Leon. Sechehaye studied German and art history in Bern. In Florence she learned the Italian language, which enabled her to work as a translator for the Swiss Medical Association from 1932.

In 1937, Sechehaye began to paint. In 1940 she asked Paul Klee for painting lessons. Klee died that same year. Sechehaye's friendly contacts with the Klee family were maintained. Felix Klee gave the vernissage speech in 1971 on the occasion of Henriette Sechehaye's first solo exhibition in the Bern gallery of the Atelier-Theater. Her main work was only created between 1970 and 1990. In 1974, Sechehaye moved to Hilterfingen am Thunersee and in 1984 to Oberhofen. Henriette Sechehaye died on December 5, 1999 in Thun.
