Munich Aerospace - Faculty of Aerospace is an association that coordinates research in the field of aerospace technology in the greater Munich area and offers training and further education. The association was founded in 2010 by the Technical University of Munich (TUM), the University of the Federal Armed Forces Munich (UniBw), the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the Bauhaus Luftfahrt (BHL) and is run by the Bavarian State Ministry for Economic Affairs and Media , Energy and Technology (StMWi) promoted.

Profile and goals

Munich Aerospace is active in the fields of research , teaching and graduate training and awards doctoral scholarships . Munich Aerospace was founded with the aim of enabling aerospace scientists to exchange ideas more closely and to jointly use the resources of the associated institutions in the Munich area. For the first time in Germany, a state university, a federal university and two non-university research institutions are working together in a non-profit association with the four partner institutions (TUM, UniBw, DLR, BHL) . Since 2016 the association has been developing the international e-learning and network program Global Aerospace Campus (see below) with the intention of intensifying cooperation with universities in other countries.

organization

A general assembly is superordinate to the board, which is responsible for all business management matters. In addition, Munich Aerospace has a scientific advisory board and a board of trustees . The advisory board is composed of experts from the aerospace industry and advises on long-term research and development planning. The board of trustees, which also has an advisory function, is made up of academics and representatives from business and public administration .

research

The association coordinates research groups in which scientists from at least two of the four partner institutions (TUM, UniBw, DLR, BHL) work together. The research groups are formed on jointly defined key topics from the aerospace industry (see below) and are led by professors or junior researchers from the partners. All key topics must be related to digitization. To date, 17 research groups have been established, nine of which have completed their projects. The research network currently (July 2019) consists of 90 scientists who are located at 20 institutes in the Munich area. In addition to practical applications, scientific publications emerge from the research groups .

Guiding themes

Current key themes at Munich Aerospace are:

Graduate education and teaching

Scholarship program

University graduates who have completed their studies in a suitable subject can apply to Munich Aerospace for a doctoral scholarship to write a doctoral thesis at the Technical University of Munich or the University of the Federal Armed Forces Munich . The scholarship holders are usually members of the research groups (see above).

Graduate school

With the Graduate School of Munich Aerospace, a structured accompanying program for doctoral students has existed since 2013. At an annual summer school , scientists from one of the four partner institutions (TUM, UniBw, BHL and DLR) of the association, external speakers and the participants of the graduate school present their research at a conference. The aim is an interdisciplinary exchange beyond the respective topic.

Teaching cooperation

As part of a teaching cooperation, master's students in aerospace at the Technical University of Munich and the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich have the opportunity to attend courses at the other university and have these recognized at their home universities.

Global Aerospace Campus

Munich Aerospace has been cooperating with aviation and space institutions from the partner regions of Québec , the state of São Paulo , Western Cape (South Africa), Georgia (USA), Shandong (China) and Upper Austria since 2016 via the Global Aerospace Campus network program . In this context, annual conferences under the title Global Aerospace Summit take place at different locations. In addition, the Global Aerospace Campus has been offering an English-language e-learning concept since 2019 , which is aimed at international students: interested parties can take part in courses via lecture recordings and massive open online courses .

Ludwig Bölkow Campus

The Ludwig Bölkow Campus in Taufkirchen near Munich, named after the engineer of the same name (1912–2003), has existed since 2012 as a location for research, business and science. The Munich Aerospace association is located on the campus as a representative of science alongside other public institutions and companies in the aerospace industry, including Airbus , Siemens and IABG as well as various start-ups and research projects. The Ludwig Bölkow Campus is also the location of the "Aeronautical Engineering" course at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich and, since 2019, the Faculty of Aviation, Space and Geodesy at the Technical University of Munich.
