Henrik Nicolai Clausen (born April 22, 1793 in Maribo on Lolland in Denmark , † March 28, 1877 in Copenhagen ) was a Danish theologian and politician.

Life

Henrik Nicolai Clausen was the son of Henrik Georg Clausen , the later provost and chief preacher of the Frauenkirche in Copenhagen .

Clausen became a theology candidate in 1813 and worked from 1822 to 1874 as professor of New Testament exegesis and dogmatics at the theological faculty of the University of Copenhagen . He was the rector of the university five times.

He was a representative of theological rationalism who was profoundly influenced by Schleiermacher's mediation theology and, above all, in his biblical exegesis was a formative influence on the Icelandic theologian Magnús Eiríksson, who lived in Copenhagen . Also Soren Kierkegaard was a student at Clausen, although it doing quite critical of standing in many ways.

Nikolai Frederik Severin Grundtvig replied to his writing Catholicismens og Protestantismens Kirkeforfatning, Lære og Ritus (Copenhagen 1825) with the counter- writing Kirkens Gienmæle mod Professor Theol. Dr. HN Clausen. Clausen won a lawsuit against Grundtvig, whose writings were placed under censorship until they were repealed in 1837 .

From 1840 to 1848 Clausen was a member of the Estates Assembly in Roskilde , and he was elected President several times. In 1848 he was involved in the creation of a proposal for a constitution for Denmark and in the same year he joined Adam Wilhelm Moltke's November Ministry as Minister (until 1851) . 1849-1853 he was a member of the Folketing . From June to August 1854 temporarily and then permanently from December 1854 to 1863 Clausen was a member of the Landsting . He was also a member of the Danish Imperial Council during its entire existence (1855–1866). Clausen was an opponent of both absolutism and universal suffrage and a supporter of Danish , Scandinavian and constitutional freedom .

In 1871 Clausen was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Dannebrog . A street in the Bahnhofsviertel in Aarhus was named after Clausen in 1887.

  3. Eiríksson saw in Clausen (in complete contrast to Grundtvig) an excellent representative of the "Evangelical Party", whose understanding of Christianity was "closest to Christian truth" ( Om Baptister og Barnedaab, including several moments from the circular og speculative Christian cathedral. Copenhagen 1844, S. VI). Nevertheless, Eiríksson's adherence to Clausen did not lead to the adoption of his concept of reason, cf. the article on Magnús Eiríksson .
