Henry Becque , actually Henri-François Becque (born April 28, 1837 in Paris , † April 12, 1899 in Neuilly-sur-Seine ) was a French playwright.

Life

It was only after a few years in other professions - employee of the Compagnie des chemins de fer du Nord , office manager of a broker and also in the office of the Legion of Honor - that Becque came to the theater.

In 1867 he made his debut with his opera Sardanapale . Together with the composer Victorin de Joncières , he congenially arranged the work of the same name by Lord Byron . He achieved his artistic and economic breakthrough in 1870 with his play Michel Pauper ; In 1886 he was able to successfully bring this piece to the stage again in a revision.

In addition to his plays, which always found an enthusiastic audience, Becque was also able to make a name for himself with his theater reviews over time. He also wrote columns and features for various newspapers and magazines ( Le Matin , Le Peuple , Revue Illustrée ) .

Henry Becque died two weeks before his 62nd birthday in Paris, where he found his final resting place.
