Henry Burmester

Henry Burmester , QC , AO (born before 1970) is an Australian lawyer and administrator.

Life

Burmester initially received his university education at the Australian National University in Canberra . There he was awarded the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Laws in 1970 . In 1972 he joined the public service in his home country, where he worked in the attorney general's office. In 1976, he received a scholarship and studied abroad at the University of Virginia with a focus on international law . There he was awarded the Master of Laws in 1977 . He also graduated from the Hague Academy of International Law . He then returned to the attorney general's office, where he mainly dealt with questions of constitutional and international law . In 1981 Burmester was given a teaching position at his alma mater , where he taught until 1985. Upon his return he worked as a legal advisor to the Australian government. In 1989 he was promoted to head of the international law department in the attorney general's office, making him chief legal representative of the Australian government for international law issues. As such, he represented Australia on several occasions in disputes before the International Court of Justice . Burmester also acted as provisional attorney general for Australia several times. He was also a member of the Australian delegation to various international treaty negotiations and international conferences. Burmester retired in 2009 and has since served in an advisory capacity to the Australian government. On January 10, 2014, he was appointed a member of a five-member court of arbitration under the Convention on the Law of the Sea . Together with Thomas Aboagye Mensah , Alfred Soons , Janusz Symonides and Alberto Székely , the dispute between the Netherlands and Russia over the incidents on the research vessel Arctic Sunrise will be settled at the end of 2013.

Awards

Burmester was appointed Crown Attorney in 1998 . For his services to international law in Australia, he was accepted as an officer in the Order of Australia in 2004 .
