Janusz Ignacy Symonides (born March  5, 1938 in Brest , Belarus ; † April 23, 2020 in Warsaw ) was a lawyer and diplomat and professor of international law at the University of Warsaw .

Life

Symonides completed his diplomatic training in Warsaw , which he completed in 1959. This was followed by a doctorate at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń , where he received his doctorate in law in 1963 . After completing his habilitation at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan , Symonides received the license to teach international law in 1968 . Between 1969 and 1973 he was employed in the administration of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, most recently as director of the Institute for Constitutional Law . In 1973 he first moved to the as deputy directorPolish Institute for International Affairs in Warsaw, which he headed from 1980 to 1987. During this time, Symonides also appeared for the first time on an international level. From 1974 to 1987 he was a member of the Polish delegation to the 3rd UN Conference on the Law of the Sea . In 1987 he moved to the Institute for East West Security Studies in New York City , where he worked for two years.

He then took up a position at UNESCO , where he headed the Human Rights, Peace, Democracy and Tolerance Department until 2000 . In addition to this activity, Symonides held numerous visiting professorships , including in Paris , Geneva and at the Hague Academy for International Law . Symonides also advised the government of his home country in various functions. For example, he has been deputy head of the Polish Electoral Commission since 2001 and has been a member of an advisory body to the Polish Foreign Minister since 2002. Since 2005 Symonides has also been a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague . On January 10, 2014, he was appointed a member of a five-member court of arbitration under the Convention on the Law of the Sea . Together with Thomas Aboagye Mensah , Henry Burmester , Alfred Soons and Alberto Székely , the dispute between the Netherlands and Russia over the events on the research vessel Arctic Sunrise is to be settled at the end of 2013.

Memberships and honors

Symonides was a member of the International Law Association and the International Peace Research Association . He was also co-editor and advisor to several legal journals. The University of Windsor , Ontario awarded him an honorary doctorate . He was accepted as a commander in the Order of Polonia Restituta .
