Henry Crichton, 6th Earl Erne

Henry George Victor John Crichton, 6th Earl Erne KCVO ( July 9, 1937 - December 23, 2015 ) was a British peer and politician ( Conservative Party ).

Life

Erne was the eldest son of John Henry George Crichton, 5th Earl Erne (1907–1940) and his wife Davina (Davidema Katharine Cynthia Mary Millicent) Bulwer-Lytton (1909–1995), a younger daughter of Victor Bulwer-Lytton, 2 Earl of Lytton , born. He was a godchild of George VI. , the ruling British monarch at the time of Erne's birth .

On May 23, 1940, a few weeks before his third birthday, he inherited all of his father's titles after he had fallen in World War II . Erne was the 4th Baron Fermanagh of Lisnaskea, in the County of Fermanagh in the Peerage of the United Kingdom (1876), the 7th Baron Erne of Crom Castle, in the County of Fermanagh in the Peerage of Ireland (1768) , the 6th Earl Erne of Crom Castle in the Peerage of Ireland (1789) and the 6th Viscount Erne of Crom Castle, in the County of Fermanagh in the Peerage of Ireland (1781). In private dealings he used the name Harry Erne . In 1945 his mother married the secret service officer and later Baron Terrington Montague Woodhouse , who became a member of the House of Commons for the Conservative Party in 1950 . Woodhouse subsequently took on the role of stepfather.

Crichton attended Eton College in Berkshire, England . In 1952 he was briefly honor Page (Page of Honor) George VI. In the same office he then worked for Elisabeth II from August 1952 to January 1954 . From 1960 to 1968 he was an officer with the North Irish Horse , with the rank of lieutenant .

Crichton held the title of Lord Lieutenant of County Fermanagh from 1986 to July 2012 . He was a member of the Royal Ulster Agricultural Society . In 2012, he was promoted to Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (KCVO) at the Queen's New Years Eve in recognition of his services as Lord Lieutenant .

Crichton lived on his Crom Castle estate near Newtownbutler in County Fermanagh in Northern Ireland. In 1987 he donated the 1,900- acre property in one of Northern Ireland's most important nature reserves to the National Trust . In 2013 Lord Erne and his son, Viscount Crichton, appeared in a BBC documentary about Crom Castle.

Membership in the House of Lords

After the death of his father in May 1940, Crichton inherited the title of Earl Erne and the then associated seat in the House of Lords . He had been a formal member of the House of Lords since May 23, 1940, although still a minor. In the House of Lords he sat for the Conservative Party. Crichton was an active member of the House of Lords and attended meetings regularly. In the Hansard , however, only a few verbal contributions from him from the period 1979 to 1999 are documented. He gave his inaugural address very late on November 14, 1979, in the context of a debate on the National Health Service and medical care in Northern Ireland.

In the 1997/98 session, it was present on 105 days. On February 24, 1999, he spoke for the last time in a debate on the Belfast Agreement ; In it he complained about concessions made by the British government to Sinn Féin without receiving anything in return.

He was a member of the House of Lords until November 11, 1999. Its membership ended by the House of Lords Act 1999 .

Private

Crichton was married twice. On November 5, 1958, he married the American Camilla Marguerite Roberts, a great-granddaughter of the American businessman Marshall Owen Roberts. The marriage had five children, four daughters and one son. The marriage ended in divorce in 1980. On June 21, 1980 he married Anna Karin Bjorck for the second time.

Crichton died on December 23, 2015 at the age of 78. The title passed to his only son, John Henry Michael Ninian Crichton, 7th Earl Erne (* 1971).
