Henri Dumont (also: Henry Du Mont or Henry de Thier , * 1610 in Borgloon ( County Loon ), near Tongeren , † May 8, 1684 in Paris ) was a Belgian composer.

Life

Dumont was born to Henry de Thier and Elisabeth Orban. The family left Liège and moved to Maastricht. There Henri and his brother Lambert became choirboys at the Basilica of Our Lady . In 1630 Henri de Thier was named organist in an act of the capital, and he was granted two months' leave to supplement his musical training. At the Liège Lambertus Cathedral , where he often stayed, he deepened his musical knowledge with Léonard de Hodémont , who was open to trends from Italy and influenced him significantly. On December 1, 1632, he resigned from his position as organist in favor of his brother. In 1639 de Thier went to Paris, where he became organist at the important parish church of Saint-Paul that same year. It was only at this time that he took the name "Dumont". From 1652 he was mentioned as a harpsichordist at the court of the Duke of Anjou (a brother of Louis XIV ) and in 1660 in the same position with the young Queen Marie-Thérèse. In 1663 he became vice conductor of the Chapelle Royale in Versailles, in 1672 the title of court conductor was added and in 1673 that of the Queen's Maître de Musique .

Dumont married Mechthild Loyens, daughter of the mayor of Maastricht, in 1653. As a Commendatarabbot , he now had extensive income from the Abbey of Silly-en-Gouffern near Lisieux in Normandy. In 1683 he resigned all offices and died a year later.

He mainly wrote church music . His oeuvre encompasses more than a hundred “petits motets”, which are the archetypal French motets. Illustrious followers of this tradition were François Couperin and Jean-Baptiste Lully . Dumont was the first to introduce the figured bass in French music and also to write it down.
