Sir Henry FitzLewis of Bromsford († 1480 ) was an English knight .

Life

Sir Henry FitzLewis (also Lewis or Lewes) was a son of Sir Lewis John and Alice, daughter of Aubrey de Vere, 10th Earl of Oxford . His sister Margaret was married to Sir William Lucy and a second marriage to Sir John Stafford . Another sister, Elizabeth, was married to Sir John Wingfield .

He was a devoted supporter of the House of Lancaster and fought at the Battle of Northampton and Wakefield during the Wars of the Roses in 1460 . In the Battle of Northampton Henry FitzLewis was a Knight Bachelor for beaten knight . In 1461 he fought at the Second Battle of St Albans and Towton . After the defeat at Towton, the first parliament under Edward IV imposed a Bill of Attainder on Sir Henry in 1461 , so that he lost all his rights and property. Sir Henry escaped and joined the Lancaster troops at Dunstanburgh Castle together with his brother-in-law Henry Beaufort, 2nd Duke of Somerset . When the castle had to surrender on December 27, 1462, Sir Henry submitted and swore allegiance and allegiance to King Edward IV, whereupon his life was spared and he was given his lands again. On May 7, 1463 the king pronounced a general pardon .

In 1469/70 Sir Henry rebelled again against the king and joined Richard Welles, 7th Baron Welles and Robert Welles, 8th Baron Willoughby de Eresby . The uprising culminated in the Battle of Losecote Field in March 1470.

When King Edward IV had to flee into exile in October 1470 and Henry VI. was re-proclaimed King, Sir Henry was appointed Steward of the Kings Household and Sheriff of Essex and Herefordshire .

Sir Henry FitzLewis died in 1480.

Marriage and offspring

Sir Henry was married twice. First marriage to Elizabeth, daughter of Edmund Beaufort, 1st Duke of Somerset and Eleanor Beauchamp, daughter of Richard de Beauchamp, 13th Earl of Warwick . The couple had a daughter:

In his second marriage Sir Henry was married to Eleanor, daughter of Robert Hungerford, 2nd Baron Hungerford . The couple had no offspring.
