Henry Ford

Henry George Ford (born September 27, 1889 in Shotesham All Saints near Norwich , England , † September 21, 1981 in Auckland , New Zealand ) was a New Zealand mathematician.

Ford was the son of a blacksmith, attended Paston Grammar School and studied with scholarships at Cambridge University (Sidney Sussex College) and graduated from the Tripos exams in 1908/09 as a Wrangler 1st class. After graduation, he became a math teacher in Oldham , Cardiff , London and Hull . In 1921 he married. In 1927 he published a book with a modern representation of Euclidean geometry . In 1933 he applied for the chair at the University of Auckland in New Zealand, where he built up the mathematics faculty and was retired in 1955.

He is best known for his geometry books. In his Calculus of Extension of 1941 (the part on records of Robert William Genesis was based), he explained the theory of extension of Hermann Grassmann .

In 1947 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand and in 1959 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Auckland.
