Henry Herbert, 4th Earl of Carnarvon
Henry Howard Molyneux Herbert, 4th Earl of Carnarvon PC DL FSA FRS (born June 24, 1831 in London , † June 29, 1890 ibid), was a British politician and a leading member of the Conservative Party . He was twice Secretary of State for the Colonies and also Lord Lieutenant of Ireland .
Life
He was born in Grosvenor Square , London, the eldest son of Henry Herbert, 3rd Earl of Carnarvon , and his wife Henrietta Anna, daughter of Lord Henry Howard-Molyneux-Howard. As his father's apparent marriage , he carried the courtesy title of Lord Porchester from 1833 to 1849 . He attended Eton College and then studied at Christ Church College of Oxford University . In 1849, when his father died, he inherited his title of nobility as Earl of Carnarvon and thereby became a member of the House of Lords . He completed construction on Highclere Castle , a neo-renaissance castle , in Hampshire, southwest of London.
Carnarvon served as Under Secretary of State for the Colonies under Lord Derby from 1858 to 1859 . In 1866 he was appointed to the Privy Council and appointed Secretary of State for the Colonies to succeed Edward Cardwell . In 1867 he introduced the British North America Act , which gave Canada greater autonomy . In the same year he resigned. In 1874 he returned to the office. In 1878 he resigned again because he did not want to wage war on the side of Turkey in an impending war . In 1885 he became Lord Lieutenant of Ireland .
Family life
Lord Carnarvon was first married to Lady Evelyn, daughter of George Stanhope, 6th Earl of Chesterfield . With her he had daughters Winifred, Margaret, and Victoria, and son George , 5th Earl of Carnavon. The eldest daughter Winifred was second married to Lord Burghclere and was the mother of Evelyn Gardner, the first wife of the writer Evelyn Waugh . Margaret married the publisher George Herbert Duckworth, the half-brother of Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell .
After her death in 1875, he married his cousin Elizabeth Catherine, daughter of the politician Henry Howard , in 1878 . With her he had two sons, Aubrey and Mervyn. Aubrey was the father of Laura Herbert, Evelyn Waugh's second wife. Lord Carnarvon died at the age of 59 on June 29, 1890 in Portman Square , London . His second wife survived him by 39 years and died in February 1929 at the age of 72.
Honors
The Carnarvon settlement in New Zealand is named after him. The town of Carnarvon in Western Australia was also named after him. The Carnarvon Basin and the Carnarvon Range in Australia also bear his name.
