Henry Swainson Cowper

Henry Swainson Cowper (born June 17, 1865 in Sudbury , Middlesex , † April 7, 1941 in Bowness-on-Windermere ) was a British landowner, author and antique collector.

Henry Swainson Cowper, son of Thomas Christopher Cowper-Essex, attended Harrow School and then entered the military. In 1883 he became a lieutenant in the 1st Volunteer Battalion, Royal Lancaster Regiment, 1887 Captain, 1889 2nd Lieutenant, 3rd battalion, Royal Lancaster Regiment (1st Royal Lancashire Militia). In 1890 he took his leave. At the end of the 19th century he traveled to Asia Minor , Mesopotamia , the Persian Gulf and Libya . In 1902 he married Amy Mary Dundas (1863-1953).

Henry Swainson Cowper published mainly on the local history of Lancashire , also on his travels in the Orient and a study on the history of assault weapons. He bequeathed his collection of antiquities, mostly of Egyptian origin, to the British Museum . He was buried in the cemetery of St. Michael and All Angels in Hawkshead , Lancashire, where he also had his High Hall estate.
