Henry Torrens

Sir Henry D'Oyley Torrens KCB KCMG (born February 24, 1833 in Merath , † December 1, 1889 in London ) was a British officer.

Henry Torrens was born to Henry Whitelocke Torrens and Eliza Mary Roberts in Meerut , India . In 1849 he joined the Royal Welch Fusiliers as a second lieutenant in the military. Torrens' career was successful, at the age of 41 he was promoted to Colonel in 1864 . During the Crimean War he took part in numerous skirmishes. He was awarded the Legion of Honor for his services . Subsequently it was used in India and was involved in the suppression of the Indian uprising of 1857 .

In 1869 he was promoted to major-general . During his employment as a General Officer Commanding in the Cork District in Ireland , he was promoted to Lieutenant-General in 1884 . From 1886 to 1888 Torrens was Governor of the Cape Colony , then Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Malta . Torrens was an avid golfer . In 1886 he founded the Royal Cape Golf Club and in 1888 the Royal Malta Golf Club, which still exists today .

In 1887 he was knighted as Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath and in 1889 as Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George .

Torrens died in London on December 1, 1889. His grave is in Brompton Cemetery , London.
