Henry Van Peters Wilson

Henry Van Peters Wilson (born February 16, 1863 in Baltimore , Maryland , † January 4, 1939 in Durham , North Carolina ) was an American zoologist . He made a special contribution to the description of the morphology and the regenerative capacity of sponges and other hollow animals .

Life

Henry Wilson's father, Samuel Augustus Wilson, was a clergyman and circuit rider , later a United States Postal Inspector .

Wilson earned a degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1883 (with William Thompson Sedgwick among others ) and a Ph.D. in 1888. with William Keith Brooks . From 1889 to 1891 Wilson worked for the United States Fish Commission (later United States Bureau of Fisheries ) at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole , Massachusetts , and from 1899 to 1902 he was director of the Marine Biological Laboratory in Beaufort , North Carolina . From 1891 he held a professorship for biology at the University of North Carolina , from 1904 one for zoology. In 1902/1903 Wilson spent a year with Franz Eilhard Schulze in Berlin, and in 1929 a year at the Naples Zoological Station .

In 1901 Wilson was elected a Fellow in the American Association for the Advancement of Science , in 1927 a member of the National Academy of Sciences , and in 1932 of the American Philosophical Society . In 1911, Wilson was President of the American Society of Zoologists .

Wilson was married to Edith Theresa Stickney († 1900) since 1893. The marriage had three children.
