Henwar Rodakiewicz

Henwar Rodakiewicz (* 1903 ; † 1976 ) was an American documentary filmmaker and photographer .

Henwar Rodakiewicz ran the film production and distribution company Film Associates . They drove the mid-1920s European films as The Lost Shoe by Ludwig Berger or the inhumanity of Marcel L'Herbier . In the 1930s and 1940s he made several films of his own, mostly documentaries , including his first experimental film, the documentary Portrait of a Young Man in Three Movements (1931). In addition, he was heavily involved in making films by other artists, whom he supported in the production in various functions, such as Paul Strand at Netze (1936) or Ralph Steiner at The City (1939). The greatest success was the film Adventure in the Bronx , which he produced. It was nominated for an Oscar in 1942 for Best Short Documentary , but was defeated by Churchill's Island . According to later self-disclosure, Rodakiewicz worked for Metro and Paramount in various positions for six years , including as associate director for several musical numbers by Bing Crosby , in Hollywood , later he mainly shot documentaries for television.

Rodakiewicz was well acquainted with Georgia O'Keeffe , Alfred Stieglitz, and Ned Scott . Stieglitz showed the film Portrait of a Young Man in Three Movements in his gallery "An American Place" in front of a large, prominent audience. He was also responsible for the inclusion of Rodakiewicz's photographs in the large retrospective exhibition on photography between 1840 and 1930 in the Museum of Modern Art . Ned Scott turned over his photographic equipment to Rodakiewicz two years before his death in 1964.
