Rolf Henry Kunz

Rolf Henry Kunz (* December 2nd, 1939 in Johanngeorgenstadt ; † April 17th, 2017 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German organist and Kapellmeister .

Life

Rolf Henry Kunz was the first of three sons son of the leather glove master Henry Kunz (1911-1995) and his wife Hilde in Saxon Erzgebirge born and initially took an apprenticeship as a glove maker , which he ended with a final examination. In addition, he received his theoretical musical training and organ lessons from the district music director Schwarze in the district town of Aue . After gaining initial practical experience of playing the organ at church services in Johanngeorgenstadt, he went on to study church music (A-exam) in Halle an der Saale. After working as a concert organist and choirmaster in Delitzsch (Leipzig district) and a stay at the Hans-Otto-Theater in Potsdam , he was finally able to begin his music director's studies in Leipzig - without a party book - which he completed with the state examination. He played as solo harpsichordist with the Handel Festival Orchestra at the Landestheater in Halle .

In 1975 he and his family received permission to leave the GDR for the Federal Republic of Germany and came to Frankfurt am Main . He became a cantor in the Maria Hilf community . He also founded and directed the “Florilegium Musicum” chamber orchestra there.

In 1992 he became organist in St. Josef and in the Justinuskirche in Frankfurt - Höchst . In 1995 he founded the "Organ Summer" and the "Höchst Organ Scene". He established the "Höchst Organ Summer" as a high-level concert series with international artists, which he organized twenty-three times and which he directed until his death. He was also a lecturer in choral conducting, music theory and organ in Frankfurt am Main. He has performed in concert on the organ in Germany and many European countries.

Rolf Henry Kunz was married to his wife Barbara and had two daughters and three grandchildren.
