The City is a reality TV - TV show radio station MTV , which had its premiere on December 29 of 2008. The series consists of two seasons and was also ended with the end of The Hills .

The City is a spin-off from The Hills, which in turn is a spin-off from Laguna Beach - The Real Orange County . Whitney Port , who was a leading actress in The Hills, also stars in The City. The series shows her personal and professional life in New York City . In addition to being broadcast on TV, the episodes are also available on the MTV website.

As a spin-off from The Hills, The City achieved above-average media coverage with the first episode. As reported, among other things The New York Times , Entertainment Weekly , New York Post , The New York Observer , People Magazine , New York Magazine and the International Herald Tribune on the first episodes and the upcoming launch of the series.

The City is the implementation of MTV's announcement that it will focus more on reality TV and less on music. The first episode reached a quota of 1.6 million viewers and thus more than double the quota of the chart show TRL , which was sold at the end of 2008 after ten years with 700,000 viewers.

Origin and production details

Liz Gately, executive producer of The Hills and The City, cites Lauren Conrad's rising popularity in The Hills as one reason for a new series . It has become more and more difficult to find private moments and work them up for a TV show. With an estimated annual income of $ 1.5 million a year, Lauren Conrad would now lead a life few of her fans could identify with. For Whitney Port, who also starred in The Hills, it would have spoken that her private life in The Hills has hardly been discussed so far. Much preparatory work was done by the managing director Kelly Cutrone of Peoples Revolution , Whitney's employer in The Hills: She brought Whitney to New York and there procured orders from Diane von Fürstenberg . The New York Magazine indicates that the mention of Peoples Revolution and Diane von Furstenberg would serve both companies to reach a young audience.

Filming started a few months before the series started. Some scenes with Olivia Palermo were shot in September 2008. Us Magazine first announced a new series with Whitney Port in June 2008.

Several camera teams are used so that even smaller scenes can be filmed from several perspectives. For example, a short scene of Whitney arriving in front of a club was filmed by two cameras while two others were waiting in the club.

Similar to its predecessors The Hills and Laguna Beach - The Real Orange County , The City is a reality TV series in which the plot is not presented by simple means, as is usual in reality TV series. Instead, it tries to achieve the quality of series with a script. For New York Magazine , the "brilliant" performance means that "no one can watch the series without thinking that it is completely staged."

action

season 1

Episodes 1–13: Whitney comes to New York to take up her new job with Diane von Fürstenberg (DvF). There she meets her new colleague Olivia Palermo. Although both try to befriend privately, this fails in the course of the plot because of Olivia's egoistic attitude. Olivia claims to have good ideas, even if they originally came from Whitney. Whitney's friend Jay, who was already seen in The Hills , doesn't get along with Olivia's "upper-class" attitude either. The relationship with Jay ultimately fails due to Jay's dishonesty. Jay hides from her that he is dating an old friend and that he wants to tour with his band for several months.

Since Whitney is new in town, she lives with her friend Erin Lucas, who she knows from Los Angeles. Erin has a long-distance relationship with Duncan Davies and the relationship is therefore somewhat problematic. Whitney's friend Jay lives with Adam, a model, in a shared apartment. There are some disputes between Adam and his girlfriend Allie Crandell (actually Alexandra Crandell), because Adam always goes to parties with Jay and other friends in Allie's absence and speaks to other women there.

In addition to the scenes with Whitney, Olivia can be seen with her cousin Nevan Donahue, who is currently moving in with Olivia because he has no job.

The first 13 episodes have a longer opening credits with the music of Pussycat Dolls , in which Whitney, Olivia, Jay, Erin and Adam are introduced by name. From the 14th episode there is only a very short opening credits in which Whitney can be seen briefly.

Episodes 14-23: From episode 14, other things were changed in addition to the opening credits. Almost all of the actors except Whitney and Olivia are no longer there. Whitney and Olivia no longer work at DvF. Whitney is working again for Kelly Cutrone, known to her employer from The Hills . With the help of Kelly, she tries to market her new fashion collection. Towards the end of the first 13 episodes, Whitney moved into her own apartment and from the 14th episode lived there with Roxy Olin, who also worked with Whitney in the same company. Roxy causes a stir with spontaneous actions.

Olivia now works at Elle Magazine . Your manager there is Joe Zee. There are problems with her colleague Erin Kaplan, who was at the magazine before her. While Joe Zee is convinced of Olivia's taste for accessories , Erin thinks little of her because Olivia does other assigned tasks half-heartedly. In some cases, Erin needs to finish Olivia's tasks (like interviews). At the end of the season, both Joe Zee make it clear that they can no longer work together.

season 2

The series continues without major changes. In addition to Whitney, Olivia, Erin and Roxy can be seen briefly in the opening credits. Olivia is now responsible for a video blog at Elle . So Olivia and Erin should run less on the way. With Erin's opinion of Olivia barely changing, the mood between the two doesn't improve as the season progresses. Ultimately, Erin tries to convince her manager that a friend of hers would be a better fit for the video blog than Olivia. But to no avail, in the last episode Olivia becomes the official face of the video blog.

Whitney shows her collection at a fashion show and tries to further market it. She also clashes with Olivia because she doesn't want to support Whitney's collection. At a fashion fair in Miami, Whitney and Roxy sell some parts of their collection. However, the increasing stress with the collection leads Whitney to argue with Roxy, although Roxy always supports her. Roxy then begins to look for a few apartments. In addition, Whitney is toying with the idea of leaving Kelly Cutrone and having her collection marketed by another PR company. At this point the series ends.

Reviews

New York Magazine describes the first episode as a "reality TV orgasm" and also speaks of obviously faked or artificial scenes, such as the conversation at the first official meeting of Whitney and Olivia in the office or the conversations between Whitney and her boyfriend. Whitney's job at Diane von Furstenberg is called "fake work" because, according to other employees, Whitney hardly ever appears in the office.

The clichéd division of New York into “downtown” and “uptown” was also criticized in some reviews. According to Entertainment Weekly, a cliché that was cultivated by the series Gossip Girl , but should not be continued by MTV. Entertainment Weekly also asks how one can believe that Whitney can afford Manolo Blahniks from her official PR salary . The answer is obvious: through their willingness to allow cameras to be followed.
