Herbert Allen (born March 31, 1899 in Shifnal , † 1965 ) was an English football player .

Career

Allen played most of his career in non-league football , especially for a variety of clubs (Wellington St George, Stourbridge FC , Burton Town , Wellington Town , Oswestry Town ) in the Birmingham & District League . With Burton he won a championship medal there in 1928 and scored twice in the 3-1 final victory in the Staffordshire Qualifying Cup against the Stafford Rangers in September 1927 . Allen tried twice at clubs in the Football League . At Notts County in the First Division , which he joined in December 1923, he came during his two and a half year engagement only in January 1924 as a replacement for Harold Hill in a goalless draw with Preston North End to use as a left half-forward ; otherwise he was active for the reserve team in the Midland League . In the third division, Charlton Athletic , Allen, who was attested to have “good knowledge of the art of dribbling” and “a first-class sniper”, was completely without use in the first team in the 1928/29 season .
