Life

Bönnen was born and raised in Leverkusen, after attending elementary school he learned the profession of lathe operator and started playing football in the youth department of VfL Leverkusen in 1952 . He spent one season, 1954/55, at Bayer 04, the remaining years up to and including the first year in the senior division, 1960/61, at his home club, the green, white and red of VfL Leverkusen. From the summer of 1961 Bönnen then played against newly promoted to the Verbandsliga Mittelrhein, the SV Schlebusch , with whom he in the 1963-64 season after two third places Middle Rhine Master was and the rise of games for second-class Regionalliga West against the Homberger SpV and Eintracht Gelsenkirchen attracted attention. The then 22-year-old then moved to the first Bundesliga champions, 1. FC Köln, in the summer of 1964. This was preceded by the invalidity of a signed contract with Fortuna Düsseldorf and his rejection of a contract offer from Bayer Leverkusen.

With the reigning German champions he suffered a serious injury in a friendly game on September 29, 1964, so that he did not play a competitive game with the billy goats in his first year. The competition in coach Georg Knöpfle's squad was so top-class, with players like Helmut Benthaus , Matthias Hemmersbach , Hans Sturm and Wolfgang Weber , that it would have been extremely difficult to get into the team even without an injury.

Only in his second year with the billy goats, 1965/66, he was used for the first time on October 23, 1965, on the 10th match day of the season, in the 4-2 home win against Borussia Neunkirchen . He was on the pitch for a full 90 minutes in this encounter and even scored the 2-0. He formed the FC defensive in front of goalkeeper Fritz Ewert with Fritz Pott , Hemmersbach, Sturm and Weber. This was followed by four appearances in the Bundesliga against 1. FC Nürnberg (0: 2), Hannover 96 (1: 1), 1. FC Kaiserslautern (3: 2) and new local rivals Borussia Mönchengladbach (2: 2). In addition, in October 1965 he was in the trade fair cup at the away game against Aris Saloniki (1: 2) and in the DFB Cup on January 22, 1966 in a disappointing home draw of 1: 1 after extra time against Tasmania 1900 Berlin for FC.

For the 1966/67 season he moved to AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands together with Fritz Ewert . A year later to NEC Nijmegen and found his sporting luck there. In Nijmegen he played until 1972, before he spent another round at Roda JC Kerkrade in 1972/73, but was forced to give up his playing career due to a serious knee injury.

After his playing career, Bönnen worked first as a youth and then as an assistant coach until 1977 in Kerkrade. In 1975, Bönnen completed his training as a soccer teacher at the sports university in Cologne, alongside fellow students such as Egon Coordes , Rudolf Schafstall and Hans-Dieter Tipphauer . His last coaching position was in Belgium with VV Patro Eisden.
