Herbert Beattie

Herbert Wilson Beattie (born August 23, 1926 in Chicago , Illinois , USA - † August 25, 2019 in Colorado Springs ) was an American opera singer ( bass ) and vocal teacher.

Life

Beattie studied singing with John Wilcox at the first American Conservatory of Music in Chicago and later with Dick Marzolo in New York . In 1948 he continued his studies at Colorado College , in 1950 at Westminster Choir College of Rider University , Princeton (New Jersey) and in 1955 at the Mozarteum in Salzburg . He made his debut as an opera singer in October 1957 at the New York City Opera in the role of Baron Douphol in Verdi's opera La traviata , where he was also engaged until 1972. Likewise in the period from 1980 to 1984. In between he sang at several American and European opera houses. He had his best roles in performances by Mozart and Rossini .

In addition to his career as an opera singer, he himself taught at Syracuse University from 1950 to 1952, from 1952 to 1953 at Pennsylvania State University , from 1953 to 1958 at the University of Buffalo , now the University at Buffalo , and from 1959 to 1982 at Hofstra University .
