Herbert Breiter

Herbert Breiter (born February 21, 1927 in Landeshut in the Riesengebirge , Silesia; † October 9, 1999 in Salzburg ) was an Austrian painter and lithographer .

Live and act

Breiter came to Austria in 1945. In 1946 he passed the entrance exam to the arts and crafts school in Salzburg. Thereupon received the right of residence in Austria. In 1947 he was granted Austrian citizenship.

Herbert Breiter began to paint as an autodidact and earned money doing arts and crafts. He became a student of Max Peiffer Watenphul , through whom he met other painters and sculptors, a. a. Agnes Muthspiel , his first partner. He was a member a. a. in the artist group Salzburger Gruppe and in the Salzburger Kunstverein . Wider undertook several trips abroad, in particular to Italy (Tuscany, Ponza island). His subjects were landscapes and atmospheric images. In 1961, the art historian Hans Vollmer described his still lifes as "in the character of the Dutch of the 17th century".

Eliette von Karajan was one of his students . In 2012 the historic Peterswacht Bastion in Salzburg's old town was renamed Herbert-Breiter-Terrasse and a memorial plaque was attached.
