Herbert Glaeser (General)
Herbert Glaeser (born July 6, 1904 in Dresden ; † July 17, 1974 ) was a German resistance fighter against National Socialism and major general of the German People's Police (DVP) in the GDR .
Life
Glaeser became a member of the Socialist Workers' Youth (SAJ) in 1920 and the SPD in 1924 . In 1931 he switched to the Socialist Workers' Party of Germany (SAP), became political director of the SAP in the Pirna district and a member of the East Saxony district leadership. After the seizure of power of the Nazis , he worked in the illegal resistance. In 1935 he was arrested and to two years and five months prison convicted. In 1942 he was drafted into the so-called Probation Division 999 and in 1944 he was deployed at the Todt Organization . From March to November 1945 he was a prisoner of war.
On his return he joined in 1945 the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) in and had since January 1946 mayor in Heidenau . Since 1946 a member of the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED), from June 1947 to November 1948 he was district administrator of the Pirna district . On December 1, 1948, he joined the German Administration of the Interior (DVdI) and later became Chief Inspector and Deputy Chief of the German People's Police for economic issues. Most recently he was head of the supply services administration of the Ministry of the Interior , from July 1957 with the rank of major general. In 1967 he retired and lived in Lehnitz near Oranienburg.
His son Horst Glaeser (1928–1984) was a colonel in the National People's Army and for many years chairman of the civil workers' union of the NVA.
