Herbert Holba
Herbert Holba (born May 7, 1932 in Vienna ; † October 26, 1994 ibid) was an Austrian cineast , film critic , film historian and director for film , television and radio .
Life
Self-taught , Holba has been involved with film and all its aspects since his early youth. From 1945 he collected film photos and film stills , film programs , film posters , videos , documents and all sorts of other objects and materials on the subject of film. In 1965 he and Peter Spiegel brought this collection to the film documentation center “ACTION” they founded in Vienna's Augarten , which soon became the largest private film collection in Austria. This film documentation center was affiliated to the Filmarchiv Austria in 2001 . In 1965, Holba also founded a film club under the name ACTION and Austria's first alternative cinema in Vienna- Wieden . He also published a film magazine with the same title from 1965 to 1969.
In 1962 he wrote 1000 years of film history with Helmut Blobner - the political propaganda film as part of a series of publications by the Vienna Youth Film Club. In the 1960s and early 1970s, Holba was a screenwriter and director for a number of short and television films and a feature film. These productions were mostly made together with Ernst A. Ekker , Peter Meiselmann and Martin Radinger . The feature film The first few days had the peculiarity of having been conceived as a silent film, although it was based on a radio play . The film was also shown in the competition at the Berlin International Film Festival in 1971 .
In 1972 and 1973 Holba worked in the editorial department of the film studies booklet published by the German Institute for Film Studies (DIF) in Wiesbaden . At this time, in 1972, his film studies work began with the book documentation Illustrierter Film-Kurier 1924-1944 , which contains 3518 film program booklets. Some of his books were also self-published by his film documentation center, the "Verlag des Dokumentationszentrums Action".
Between 1970 and 1974 Holba contributed to the series of publications for the Berlin International Film Festival : " Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers ", " Eddie Cantor ", " Ludwig Berger ", " Lilian Harvey " and others.
Between 1976 and 1979 he was the initiator and curator of the Viennale retrospectives on Werner Hochbaum , Erich Engel , Emil Jannings and the “fantastic German film”. From 1976 Holba programmed the ACTION cinemas “Neubauer”, “Admiral” and “Rechbauerkino” in Graz.
From 1978 to 1980 Herbert Holba was the author of the Ö1 radio broadcasts Seeing and Understanding Films and Film History in Sequences , of which 37 broadcasts appeared annually. At that time he was also the editor of the Ulm film history journal F (= film journal ).
In 1984 he published Reclam's German Film Lexicon. From 1985 to 1987 he was a consultant for film history and co-author of the 21-part ORF television documentary series These were times about German-language sound film hits between 1930 and 1960 in the form of compilation films and film essays.
