Herbert Lindlar

Herbert Lindlar , also Herbert Lindlar-Wilson (born March 15, 1909 in Sheffield ; † June 27, 2009 ), was a British - Swiss chemist . He became known in particular for the catalyst he developed for hydrogenation, which bears his name as the Lindlar catalyst .

biography

Lindlar came to Switzerland with his family in 1919. He studied chemistry at the ETH Zurich and the University of Bern and received his doctorate in 1939 with a thesis " On the behavior of dicarboxylic acids in ureid formation ". He then joined the pharmaceutical company Hoffmann-La Roche , for which, with the exception of a four-year break, he worked until retirement in 1974. During these four years Lindlar was the British Vice Consul in Zurich and Basel .
