Herbert Naumann (journalist)

Herbert Naumann (born September 11, 1929 in major cities ; † September 10, 2018 ) was a German journalist . From 1985 to 1989 he was editor-in-chief of New Germany (ND) and from 1986 to 1989 a member of the Central Committee of the SED .

Life

Naumann, the son of a worker, attended the elementary school in Zetteritz from 1936 to 1942 and the elementary trade school in Mittweida from 1944 to 1946 . He then worked until 1948 as an employee in the legal department of land reform at the Rochlitz district council . In 1946 he became a member of the Free German Youth (FDJ) and the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED). From 1948 he was head of the district news office, then until 1949 employed by the SED district leadership in Rochlitz and district editor of the Chemnitzer Volksstimme . In 1950 he began working in the editorial office of Neues Deutschland. He completed a degree in journalism and was the ND's foreign correspondent in Prague from 1960 to 1963 . In 1963 he became deputy head of the ND economic department, and in January 1966 he became a member of the editorial board of the party newspaper. From November 1967 to November 1985 he was one of the deputy editors-in-chief of the paper. On November 25, 1985, he replaced Günter Schabowski in the office of editor-in-chief, who had been appointed the new 1st secretary of the SED district leadership in East Berlin . From December 1985 to 1989 he was a member of the central board of the Association of Journalists of the GDR (VDJ). From April 21, 1986 (XI. Party Congress) to November 1989, he was a member of the Central Committee of the SED.

Naumann died the day before his 89th birthday.
