Herbert Olofsson

Herbert Olofsson (born April 8, 1910 in Landskrona , † December 1, 1978 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish wrestler . He was vice European champion in 1937 and Olympic gold medalist in 1936 in Greco-Roman. Lightweight style.

Career

Herbert Olofsson grew up in Stockholm and was a firefighter. He started wrestling as a teenager and started for the Stockholm wrestling clubs Brandkårens IK and BK Athens . He was active exclusively in Greco-Roman. Style.

After he had become Swedish featherweight champion for the first time in 1933, he started in the same year for the first time at an international championship, the European Championship in Helsinki . There he was still in featherweight and was subject to the top wrestlers Wolfgang Ehrl from Germany and Svend Martinsen from Norway . With these results he took 4th place.

In 1935 he took part in the European Championships in Copenhagen . In the lightweight he came to two victories, but lost to Olympic champion Lauri Koskela from Finland and Abraham Kurland from Denmark and finished 4th again.

In 1936 he qualified for participation in the Olympic Games in Berlin . He achieved four victories in the lightweight. He was defeated by the Olympic champion Voldemar Väli from Estonia and had to retire because he had scored 5 missing points without having the opportunity to fight for a medal. He landed again in 4th place.

In 1937 Herbert Olofsson finally won a medal at the European lightweight championship in Paris . He defeated in Paris a. a. the German champion Fritz Weikart from Dortmund and Abraham Kurland and only lost to Lauri Koskela, with which he took 2nd place.

From 1938 he had to give way to Gösta Andersson at the Swedish championships and was therefore no longer used at international championships.
