Herbert Scheele

Herbert August Edward Scheele OBE (* in the 2nd quarter of 1905 in Bromley , Kent ; † March 23, 1981 ibid) was an English badminton official and non-fiction author.

life and work

As a badminton player Herbert Scheele was active shortly before and after the Second World War in County Kent and also started in the English Trials from 1946 to 1948. However, he achieved much greater importance in his administrative functions in badminton. He was secretary of the International Badminton Federation from 1938 to 1976 and secretary of the Badminton Association of England from 1945 to 1970 . Competitions such as the Thomas Cup and the Uber Cup were launched under his leadership . He also played a major role in initiating the first world championships in 1977. He also laid the foundation stone for the premiere of badminton as a demonstration sport at the 1972 Olympics. In recognition of his achievements, he was awarded a trophy specially made for him at the 1977 Badminton World Cup . Replicas of this trophy are still awarded to particularly deserving badminton players and officials under the name Herbert Scheele Award . Scheele himself was inducted into the Badminton Hall of Fame as an inaugural member in 1997 . Four months before his death, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire by the Queen . In memoriam, the World Badminton Federation donated the Herbert Scheele Trophy.
