Herbert Schneider (architect)
Herbert Schneider (born January 21, 1903 in Zwickau ; † March 5, 1970 in Antonshöhe ) was a German architect .
Life
Schneider first completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter in Hamburg and came to Dresden in 1924, where he studied architecture and spatial art at the arts and crafts school . In 1926 he became a master student in the field of architecture with Oskar Menzel and from 1928 worked in Hans Richter's architecture office . Between 1933 and 1943 Schneider worked as a freelance architect.
After the end of the Second World War , Schneider took part in numerous competitions and in 1946 became known for his reconstruction plan for the city of Dresden at the exhibition “The New Dresden”. In 1951 he became brigade leader in the VEB Projektierung Sachsen. On November 20, 1952, he won the first main prize in a competition to rebuild Dresden's old market ; see building complex Altmarkt 4–6 / Wilsdruffer Straße 15–21 and its part of the Altmarkt building . Even Walter Ulbricht praised the draft Schneiders:
"The designs by the architects Schneider and Rascher prove that it is possible to incorporate the historical monuments in the new buildings in such a way that the overall composition of Dresden will secure its old fame as a city of art."
From 1954 to 1961, Schneider was chief architect for the city center, south suburbs and Seevorstadt areas of the city of Dresden under the direction of the city planning director Liebscher. He built numerous buildings, including residential buildings and the theater building of the Hercules Club on Sternplatz. After his politically motivated removal from office as chief architect, Schneider was head of the Zwingerbauhütte from 1963 and campaigned for the preservation of Dresden's historic building fabric.
