Herbert Schwedt (born July 31, 1934 in Beuthen ; † March 21, 2010 in Bad Kreuznach ) was a German folklorist .

He completed his studies in history , German , ethnology and folklore at the universities of Jena, Göttingen and Tübingen. In 1960, he was there in the professional folklore with a thesis on community life forms in large urban settlements doctorate . In 1968 he completed his habilitation at the same university on "Cultural styles of small communities". After teaching at the University of Applied Sciences for Libraries in Stuttgart, he was appointed to the University of Mainz in 1972 , where he taught until his retirement in 1999.

One of the early research projects he pursued with his students was an investigation into the Mainz Carnival . It was published in 1977 as Volume 1 of the Mainz Studies on Linguistic and Folk Research . The concept of research-based teaching was further developed by him in several projects, which were devoted to the emigration regions in Rhineland-Palatinate, regional custom research, the future of small communities or everyday life in two selected Hungarian-German villages. From today's perspective, their investigation appears to be so valuable because it was started before the fall of the “Iron Curtain” and exemplifies the change in the transition to post-socialist society.

Herbert Schwedt, partly in close cooperation with his wife Elke Schwedt, repeatedly dealt with questions of regional folklore research in Rhineland-Palatinate. This resulted in basic documentation and analyzes. In addition to his university work, there is his participation in the museum scene in Rhineland-Palatinate, his support for the work of the Institute for Historical Regional Studies at the University of Mainz and his contribution to the foundation of the Society for Folklore in Rhineland-Palatinate in 1986 , which he chaired for many years was.
