Herbert Zand (born November 14, 1923 in Knoppen ( Pichl-Kainisch municipality ), Salzkammergut , † July 14, 1970 in Vienna ) was an Austrian narrator, poet , essayist and translator .

Life

Herbert Zand was born on a small farm. During the Second World War he was seriously wounded on the Eastern Front . From 1954 he lived as a publishing editor in Vienna, from 1961 he worked for the Austrian Society for Literature . His narrative work is shaped by the traumatic experience of the war; the leitmotifs are death and hopelessness. Conflicts in post-war Viennese society is the theme of his major work "Heirs of Fire" (1961). Herbert Zand's work is characterized by poetic power and deep seriousness in relation to his literary work. He also wrote numerous essays on cultural policy.

The war as a topic has preoccupied him for a lifetime due to his traumatic experience. In an interview in 1953 he said: "The reason for writing a war book was the suffering I witnessed and the shock of it, not the temptation to put a sensational book on the market, and I also used all of these contrivances Art renounces. People still suffer, they still suffer in a similar way, and to that extent it is actually not a book about World War II, but rather a book about modern war in general.
