Heribert Hofmann
Heribert Hofmann (* 1934 ; † November 28, 2004 ) was a German wrestler . He competed in the welterweight division.
Career
Hofmann's first major success was winning the German youth championship in 1952. He was German champion in free style in 1954, 1958 and 1959, in Greco-Roman style in 1957. In 1956, he was also German runner-up in this style. His main competitors at that time were Lothar Martus from Frankfurt-Eckenheim , Hans Böse from Untertürkheim and Mansour Hasrati from Frankfurt-Eckenheim. In the qualifying tournament for the 1956 Olympic Games, he won ahead of Böse and Martus. However, Alfred Tischendorf , Jena / GDR, was nominated for the Games, obviously for political reasons, because the associations from East and West did not manage to hold a qualifying tournament.
In international matches in 1956, Heribert Hofmann won against Checchini, France, clearly on points and was defeated by the Olympic champions Mithat Bayrak , Turkey and Miklós Szilvási , Hungary, each just by points. He was also very unlucky in qualifying for the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960. After he won two elimination tournaments u. a. against Werner Bodamer , Kirchheim and Günter Marischnigg , Annen, who then won the silver medal in Rome, he had to pass due to injury.
He let his career end out of disappointment, but fought for many years for his club, AC Lichtenfels.
