Herman Franke
Herman Franke (actually Hermannus Johannes Franke, born October 13, 1948 in Groningen ; † August 14, 2010 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch criminologist , university professor and freelance writer since 1995. He became known first through non-fiction books and media appearances as a legal sociologist, later through novels, stories and essays .
Life
The son of a Catholic middle-class family, who grew up in Groningen-Zuiderdiep, initially worked as a newspaper reporter for the Nieuwsblad van het Noorden in the 1970s . After completing a degree in sociology in Amsterdam, he specialized in criminology. His final thesis, Twee eeuwen gevangen ... , which was rated summa cum laude , was recognized as the best foreign specialist publication in 1995 by the American Society of Criminology . It was reissued in a shortened version for the general public. At the University of Amsterdam , he made it to the position of senior lecturer in the sociology of criminal law / criminology and a sought-after media expert in this field. He has published several non-fiction books on crime and justice .
He made his debut as a writer in 1992 with the novel Weg van loze dromen (= street of idle dreams). His second novel, Nieuws van de nacht 1995, did not attract much attention either. He decided to become a full-time writer that same year and left university. His breakthrough among the literary audience actually came in 1998 with the novel De verbeelding (= The Imagination), for which he received the renowned Dutch AKO Literature Prize. With the literary essay volume De ironie van de romantiek , which was written for the Frans-Kellendonk reading at the Radboud Universiteit in Nijmegen , Franke showed another facet of his skills in 2000. In 2003 his novel Wolfstonen and in 2004 the band Notulen (= minutes) appeared with short stories.
Franke worked as an essayist, columnist and commentator for the internationally renowned Amsterdam daily De Volkskrant . In 2004 a selection of his columns was published under the title Waarom vrouwen betere lezers zijn (= Why women are better readers). Franke was also always active as a literary critic for the literary magazines of other newspapers. At the literary magazine De Revisor , he was part of the regular authors. At the end of 2007 the novel Uit het niets (= Out of nowhere) came out, the first part of the novel cycle Voorbij ik en waargebeurd . At the end of 2008, the second part of Zoek op lende (= search for love) was published.
Herman Franke died on August 14, 2010 in his Amsterdam apartment of an incurable prostate cancer .
