Herman Lommel

Herman Lommel (born July 7, 1885 in Erlangen ; † October 5, 1968 ; also Hermann Lommel ) was a German Indo-Iranist and religious scholar .

life and work

Lommel was the son of the physicist Eugen von Lommel and his wife Luise, née Hegel. The mother was a granddaughter of the philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel . He completed the humanistic grammar school and studied at the universities of Munich and Göttingen . He received his doctorate in 1912 in Göttingen and completed his habilitation in 1916, also in Göttingen. Between 1916 and 1918 he participated in the war . From 1917 he was professor for comparative Indo-European linguistics in Frankfurt / Main .

One of the central works of modern linguistics , the basic questions of general linguistics by Ferdinand de Saussure , he translated into German.

His rendering of the story of the wandering of the seer Bhrigu into the afterlife from the ancient Indian sacrificial tract called Shatapatha Brahmana was of influence on mass and power , the main work of Elias Canetti .
